Bionicare: Electrial Stimulation for Osteoarthritis
The Bionicare system was first approved by the FDA in 2003 as a non-surgical treatment option for patients suffering from mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the knee. While it does take a significant amount of hours to take effect, the results are long lasting, yielding continued improvement with continued use in many cases.
What does it do?
The Bionicare system for knees is a neoprene wrap that you wear while sleeping or relaxing. It delivers a sub-sensory electrical current via electrodes and a hyperallogenic gel. Unlike the electrical stimulation units you may have experienced while at the chiropractor or physical therapist’s office, the stimulation from the bionicare unit cannot be felt. The current creates a negatively charged environment in the knee joint that mimics the natural state of a healthy knee.
Does it really work?
If your goal is to delay or eliminate the need for knee surgery, a Bionicare unit may be one of your best treatment options. During a 4-year study of patients with severe knee OA, who had been recommended for a knee replacement by their physicians, researchers found that patients using the Bionicare unit decreased their likelihood of getting a knee replacement by 67%*
